Ankara is directing the Armenian-Azerbaijani process and has prevented it from being resolved, Caucasus expert Karen Igityan said in an interview with AlphaNews, commenting on the remarks by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who said that once a final peace agreement is signed, Turkey would be ready to normalize relations with Armenia.

“Turkey is trying to present its role differently. This is the country that accompanies Azerbaijan and shows it the way. Turkey is trying to appear as a country that simply has allied relations with Azerbaijan and is forced to somehow take into account the interests of this ally,” Igityan said.

According to him, Ankara has assumed the role of overseer in relations between Baku and Yerevan.

“It is Turkey that for years has prevented Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations from reaching any results, because Azerbaijan was much weaker for a long time, had agreed to many things in negotiations, but each time the Azerbaijani president visited Turkey, his intentions changed afterwards,” the expert emphasized.
