Turkey has expressed readiness to open a consulate in any city of Karabakh, particularly in Shushi, Turkish Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan Birol Akgün said in an interview with APA.
According to Akgün, an official application for opening a consulate in Shushi was submitted back in 2021, but at the moment no country has a diplomatic mission there. The decision on the opening will be made by Azerbaijan in accordance with its sovereign rights.
It is worth noting that since the end of the 44-day war in Artsakh, Turkish authorities have repeatedly stated their intention to open a consulate general in the region. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Ankara’s plans during the signing of the “Shushi Declaration” in June 2021. For now, these intentions remain on hold
