Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Alen Ghevondyan commented on the latest domestic political developments in Armenia.
Addressing the decision to hold the Episcopal Assembly in another country, the political scientist noted that this is a sensible step, allowing the clergy to avoid pressure from the authorities.
“The current government is exerting massive pressure on various priests. I would not even rule out persecution of their family members and relatives. Holding the meeting outside the country will give the clergy an opportunity to escape this pressure and express their real position,” Ghevondyan said.
He emphasized that the authorities would try every possible way to prevent the meeting, including banning clergy from leaving the country or imposing restrictions through fabricated charges. According to the political scientist, the goal is one and the same: to destroy the Church as a symbol of national identity and turn the clergy into a “puppet” organization.
The political scientist also commented on the formation of the “Strong Armenia” party by businessman and national philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan, noting that the authorities are clearly wary of this force.
“Unlike Pashinyan, who is no longer legitimate, this young team and Samvel Karapetyan are legitimate and radiate positive energy,” Ghevondyan emphasized.
He praised the five economic steps presented by the party, noting that they are free of populism.
“These people have proven through their business careers that they are capable of solving serious problems,” the expert added.
