On May 14, the Chamber of Representatives of Uruguay unanimously approved a bill that declares April 24 as “Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day” and obliges the media of the country to address the topic of the Armenian Genocide every year on April 24, DiarioArmenia reports.

The initiative had been approved on May 7, so if no observations are made by the Executive Branch, it will be signed into law in the coming days.

The bill was presented by parliamentarians Nazmi Camargo, María Eugenia Roselló, Juan Martín Rodríguez, and Micaela Melgar.

MPs Pedro Jisdonian, Carlos Varela, Rafael Menéndez, Ivan Posada, María Eugenia Roselló, Felipe Algorta, Hugo Cámara, Ubaldo Aita, and Juan Martín Rodríguez participated in the parliamentary debate in favor of the project, with several of them condemning the way Turkey’s denial and impunity have fueled Azerbaijan’s crimes against Armenia and Artsakh in recent years, as well as the destruction of Armenian cultural heritage.

The project approved by both Chambers is based on an initiative by Dr. Gustavo Vaneskahian of the Evangelical Church, which received the support of different institutions of the Armenian community, including the Armenian National Committee of Uruguay.
