US is behind tensions on Armenia-Azerbaijan border, military analyst says
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian military analyst Alexey Leonkov commented on Azerbaijan’s false claims of Armenian shootings and potential stakeholders in the escalation in the region.
“Firstly, most likely, Azerbaijan is unhappy with the peace agreement that is currently being finalized. Apparently, the provisions deemed critical by Azerbaijan or its patrons are either absent or not explicitly addressed. Secondly, Azerbaijan is trying to create a tense situation in Transcaucasia, as any military conflict in the region could reignite instability. Given that relations between the US, Israel, and Iran have now worsened, this situation may be one play or an act from one play. Azerbaijan is simply playing its part, because we know that in that same 44-day war that took place between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Azerbaijan received active support from Turkey and Israel—interested parties that are opposed to Iran.
There is a third factor here as well. This is, of course, the role of Russia because Georgia is now demonstrating a change in attitude towards Russia, and amidst these developments, the Anglo-Saxons—the US and Great Britain—are striving to maintain their influence in Transcaucasia. They are clearly making efforts to ensure such provocations escalate further. Since the Russian presence in Transcaucasia is now minimal, and Armenia itself is expressing doubts about the presence of Russian troops at the base in Gyumri and Russian border guards, and is gradually aligning with the US, we see that the most advantageous situation is developing for the US. I believe that the US is behind all these acts, which we witness nearly every week in this region. Azerbaijan is simply executing these moves under the guise of its national interests,” the expert said.
