US is interested in strengthening its influence in the region – Maxim Chirkov on Yerevan-Washington relations
Speaking with Alpha News, Maxim Chirkov, Associate Professor at the Institute of Economics and Finance of the State University of Management, commented on the US Embassy’s statement that the United States intends to help Armenia in ensuring public safety.
According to the political scientist, the United States is trying to strengthen its political, economic and any other influence through the support of individual countries.
“The news that the United States has promised Armenia assistance in ensuring public safety underscores the interest of the United States in strengthening its influence in the region. In principle, it is clear that the United States is somewhat losing its position in Eurasia because the influence of China and Russia is increasing. In this regard, the United States is trying to strengthen its political, economic and any other influence through the support of individual countries. If we talk about Armenia, this is the Transcaucasian region, which is very important for Russia because we have North-South transport corridors. Moreover, we are very interested in parallel import technologies, which are provided through a group of Transcaucasian countries. At the same time, the United States is trying to promote alternative projects, that is, also to build transport corridors using these countries to its advantage, to strengthen its own economic and political activity in the region,” Chirkov said.
“The desire of the United States to participate in the situation in Armenia is quite understandable. Armenia is a country that has been very friendly with Russia for many years and even decades. These friendly ties work both ways, and the improvement of the Armenian-US relationship, the United States sees as an opportunity to damage Russia’s foreign policy and foreign economic activities. Therefore, it seems to me that these actions are natural within the framework of a geopolitical confrontation that we see today. It would be difficult to expect anything else from the Americans. They are trying to influence the situation,” Chirkov concluded.
