Harut Sassounian, the California Courier’s editor and publisher, spoke with Alpha News about the upcoming April 24 events marking the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey.

“This year, April 24 marks the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. On this day, almost all countries of the world pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. As in previous years, we have again taken the initiative to gather outside the Turkish Consulate in the United States on April 24. The second important event will take place in the city of Montebello, where a large memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide has been erected. By the way, the memorial was erected about 50 years ago on the public land of the United States, which is an exceptional case. These days I always visit different countries to speak about the Armenian Genocide. This year will not be an exception, and on April 6-7, I will be in Boston, where I will deliver a speech on the UN recognition of the Armenian Genocide,” Sassounian said.

He stressed that the role of the Diaspora is quite significant in advancing the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

“We have been talking about the Genocide for decades, which does not allow the world to forget what Turks did to Armenians. More than 30 countries have recognized the Armenian Genocide and this is also the result of the work of the Diaspora. We have been working for many years for the US to also recognize the Armenian Genocide, and in 2021, Biden recognized it. Also, the US Congress has passed resolutions that contain references to the Armenian Genocide four times. And the countries that still have not recognized the Armenian Genocide most likely do not want to spoil relations with Turkey, not because they do not believe that it happened,” Sassounian concluded.
