Varuzhan Geghamyan: Armenia is an obstacle for Azerbaijan to turn the South Caucasus into a zone of Turkish influence
Azerbaijan was created so that the South Caucasus would become a zone of Turkish influence, Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan told Alpha News.
“Just like yesterday, 10 years ago, 30 years ago, or 100 years ago, a state entity in the South Caucasus, called the Republic of Azerbaijan, was created for only one purpose: to make the South Caucasus a zone of Turkish influence. The main obstacle to this was, is and will remain the statehood of Armenia. Basically, the Republic of Azerbaijan today has the opportunity to eliminate this main obstacle in the simplest possible way,” the Turkologist emphasized.
Geghamyan mentioned which road in the South Caucasus is most convenient for quick travel from east to west․
“If we look at the relief map of the South Caucasus, we will see that this is a unique fusion of large mountain ranges. There are very few places there that allow unimpeded, simple and quick passage from east to west. The main of these places is the valley of the Araks River, which begins in the territory of Western Armenia, passes along the current border of the Republic of Armenia, descends into the Meghri valley, the south of Artsakh, and then reaches the Kura-Araks lowland in Azerbaijan,” Geghamyan said.
Our interlocutor noted that this part is the most convenient for any type of communications.
“This area is most convenient for any type of communications. It is no coincidence that both during the times of the Russian Empire and during the Soviet Union, railways in the western part of the South Caucasus were mainly built according to this principle.
This facilitated the task and made it possible to quickly move troops, weapons, and ammunition from one area to another,” Geghamyan explained.
