Vigen Hakobyan: It is hard to imagine that the government will manage to collect 50% plus 1 vote
Political strategist Vigen Hakobyan believes that the ruling power relies on low turnout at elections to the Yerevan City Council, making it possible for them to take over the city government.
“If there is a low turnout, the percentage of those brought by the Civil Contract may increase, as happened at the snap parliamentary election of 2021. At that time, about 26-27% voted for the Civil Contract, but as a result, the votes were 54%, because the participation was 49%. Now, if the participation is lower, even the lowest results can become impressive.
But in this case, it is a bit hard to imagine that the government will manage to collect 50% plus 1 vote. It will be a big problem for it to hold the second party so that they can form a coalition in the future. For example, non-governmental forces, in this regard, have more opportunities to overthrow the Civil Contract,” Hakobyan told Alpha News.
According to the political strategist, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan joined the march of the ruling force and the closing rally on the last day of the campaign because the Civil Contract doubts its victory.
“The Civil Contract has understood that it is necessary to unite all resources, even when there are obvious contradictions within the team. I also believe that outside players are forcing Nikol Pashinyan to participate, because these elections have a geopolitical tone due to the legitimacy of the current government,” Hakobyan added.
To remind, the elections to the Yerevan City Council will be held on September 17, with 14 political forces participating: 13 parties and 1 alliance.
