During the Russo-Persian War of 1826-1828, local residents migrated from the Khoy and Salmast provinces of Persia, arriving in family groups and settling in the area, one of the residents of Khndzorut shared in an interview with Alpha News.

“Over time, due to drought, people began to relocate. If we climb into the mountains, we’ll see old settlements and the ruins of small houses. That shows that large families once lived here. Later, they settled in Old Khndzorut. Between 1864 and 1884, the local church was renovated, and in 1885, representatives from Etchmiadzin came to officially consecrate it—it was approved for holding liturgies—and named it Saint Stepanos,” she said.

She noted that the village is gradually aging. “I wish conditions could be created in the village that would encourage young people to stay and work here. Most of the men in the village are contract servicemen,” she added.
