The information that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was supposed to visit Armenia on May 19 to participate in the opening ceremony of the North-South transport corridor was actively circulating in the Russian and Armenian press yesterday.

However, the visit was canceled at the last moment, and the Iranian president visited Azerbaijan instead.

Alpha News tried to find out whether the Iranian president’s visit to Armenia was actually expected yesterday.

We contacted the press service of the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure.
Spokesperson Sona Harutyunyan confirmed, without specifying a date, that a joint event with Iran was scheduled last week.

In particular, she mentioned that a road opening ceremony was expected to be held in the Agarak-Kajaran section.

Without specifying the reason, Sona Harutyunyan said that the event did not take place.

Alpha News later received a response from the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

“Official information is provided on the confirmed visits of high-ranking officials of the Republic of Armenia,” said Ani Badalyan, spokesperson of the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

On May 19, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash.
The preliminary cause of the crash is poor weather conditions.

On May 19, the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan took part in the opening ceremony of the dam built on the Araks River on the border of the two countries.

President Raisi ruled the country since August 3, 2021.
