Washington agreements have not yielded any tangible results – Andrey Perla
Speaking with Alpha News, political commentator Andrey Perla commented on the news that US President Donald Trump reiterated that he is “honored to help resolve the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.” According to the political analyst, it is crucial for Trump to demonstrate that there are countries grateful for his peace efforts.
“It’s actually very simple. Trump has proven himself not only to be a prominent American politician but also a man of extraordinary vanity. He desperately wants the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in a month, and among those who nominated Trump for the prize are both Pashinyan and Aliyev. So Trump is simply now running an election campaign, so to speak, to ensure that he actually receives the prize, and to this end, he’s reminding everyone of his achievements. Whether these achievements are real or imaginary is completely irrelevant from his perspective. But he really does want to show that there are countries, leaders of countries, who are grateful to him for his peace efforts, and in this way, he’s giving them a pass. And they’re giving him that pass back,” Perla said.
According to the expert, the peace efforts in question have not actually produced any tangible results.
“This situation is, of course, ridiculous and shameful—for all involved. The US president, who is literally begging for this Nobel Prize, looks completely foolish. The leaders of states who are playing along with him look very foolish, especially since the peace efforts in question have not yet yielded any tangible results. The memorandum signed in Washington, as everyone knows, is non-binding. At best, it’s a framework agreement expressing intent to sign something in the future. As time goes on, it becomes increasingly clear how difficult it is for Armenia to meet the conditions outlined in the memorandum and those publicly stated. The challenges Armenia would face in trying to follow this path are immense. But from Trump’s perspective, none of that matters,” Perla concluded.
