The resolution adopted by the European Parliament differs from others as it explicitly names individuals against whom sanctions should be applied, Aram Kevorkian, the EAFJD representative for press relations, told Alpha News.

“Yesterday, MEPs criticized the European Commission, saying that it is doing nothing to free the Armenian prisoners held in Baku. Even one of the members, Diego Colas, advised going to Armenia and seeing what is really going on there. As you know, 523 members voted for the resolution today, and it is different in that it mentions specific names: Zeynal Aghayev, Jamal Ramazanov and Anar Rzayev. These are judges targeted for sanctions. The parliament sees Aliyev’s dictatorial policy and, through this resolution, expresses its protest against what happened,” Kevorkian noted.

According to him, if someone misuses their political or military power for harmful purposes, the European Parliament has the right to impose sanctions against them.

“The European Parliament has named individuals in other resolutions, and this is not news. In addition, if the European Parliament sees that someone misuses their political or military power for harmful purposes, it can impose sanctions against them. I assume that the Council of Europe saw complaints from the Armenian authorities or other international humanitarian organizations, which is why it mentioned the names of the Azerbaijani judges.

It should be noted that these judges made unjust decisions not only regarding Armenian prisoners, but also regarding their journalists and the population. In today’s resolution, the European Parliament reiterated its position, telling the European Commission that any agreement with Azerbaijan must be discussed,” Kevorkian concluded.
