Speaking with Alpha News, former Ukrainian MP Oleg Tsaryov commented on what to expect from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s meeting with US Presidential Special Envoy Steven Witkoff.

“We would like to see the conflict resolved. But we don’t know how the negotiations with the Ukrainian side ended, and we certainly don’t want Russia to back down from its demands. As far as I understand, the current discussion is about Moscow making some kind of compromise. But, by and large, we don’t have much room to move forward. On the contrary, the 28 points of Trump’s plan need to be supplemented with provisions on the Russian language and the protection of the Orthodox Church. Moreover, separate protocols will have to be written for each point. For example, the point on combating neo-Nazism must include protection of the Russian language and the Church—this is the subject of a separate agreement. I understand that Witkoff arrived after a meeting with the Ukrainian delegation, and it is quite possible that they did not accept all the points of Trump’s plan. Therefore, Witkoff will now ask Vladimir Putin whether Russia is prepared to compromise on any of its demands. If so, then the transition to detailing the agreements with the Ukrainian side will begin. For now, they are too broadly defined; they need to be regulated in detail. If it is not ready, the Ukrainian delegation will continue to be pressured,” Tsaryov said.

According to the expert, those who are willing to accept Russia’s terms will ultimately remain in the Ukrainian delegation.

“By the way, it is a good way to exert pressure: the one who objected has already been dismissed—they might face charges. I am talking about Yermak. If Umerov continues to behave this way, as a US citizen, he could face 300 years in prison thanks to American ‘aid.’ Ultimately, the only ones left will be those prepared to accept Russia’s terms,” Tsaryov concluded.
