West wants to make Armenia springboard in South Caucasus, expert says
Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Vladimir Kireev commented on the news that European Council President Charles Michel and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev discussed the resumption of meetings on Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization in Brussels.
According to Kireev, all the efforts of the European Union are aimed at supporting Yerevan’s position in the conflict in the South Caucasus because the West wants to make Armenia a springboard in the South Caucasus.
“For several years, the West has been balancing the support of Azerbaijan and Armenia. The West sought to win over both countries to its side, secure their support and gently push Russia out of the region. However, over the past two or three months, the situation has changed—the strategy of the West has changed. We are talking about the position of the European Union, France, and probably even the United States. Now this is a fairly unambiguous support for the Republic of Armenia. All the efforts of the European Union and France are aimed at supporting Yerevan’s position in the conflict in the South Caucasus. Azerbaijan is left in the cold. We can say that a provocative policy is being pursued against Baku, which seeks to unbalance and put it in an uncomfortable position. Armenia, in turn, is being supported in every possible way. The West promises to provide military contingents.
What is the reason for this? It is quite possible that new military bases will be deployed on the territory of Armenia to oust Russia and make Armenia a springboard in the South Caucasus. Accordingly, it is against the interests of Russia, against the interests of Iran, and in the long term, against the interests of Turkey,” Kireev said.
“It is quite possible that the collective West will move from rhetorical techniques to direct and actual support of Armenia on the ground in the form of some armed contingent. The number of people is unknown, and their status is unclear either. France has already supplied weapons. Apparently, there will be people soon. Armenia has been chosen as its springboard.
That is why Yerevan is being directly supported on international platforms in its confrontation with Baku,” Kireev concluded.
