Since 2020, Azerbaijan has taken consistent and clear steps to carry out ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh, and this has already become a reality, now there are almost no Armenians left there, Armenia’s Representative on International Legal Matters Yeghishe Kirakosyan said at a meeting of the UN International Court of Justice during the hearings of Armenia’s claim against Azerbaijan.
“Azerbaijan deliberately disrupted the work of important public services and starved the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, after which they launched a brutal attack and forced people to flee from the homeland of their ancestors,” he said, adding that the Lachin corridor was opened for the first time in 9 months for ethnic cleansing.
“After September 24, the Azerbaijani side opened the Lachin corridor, people began to leave Nagorno-Karabakh and arrive in Armenia,” Kirakosyan said.
According to him, in 2021, Azerbaijan declared that it would allow the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh to return to their homes, but so far not a single Armenian has returned.
Hearings on Armenia’s claim against Azerbaijan has started at the International Court of Justice today.
The Armenian government has appealed to the International Court of Justice with a request to apply provisional measures against Azerbaijan.
Armenia called on the UN Court to confirm Azerbaijan’s commitment to refrain from “any actions directly or indirectly aimed at or having the effect of displacing the remaining ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh.”
