In an interview with Al Arabiya, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that the “Zangezur corridor” could serve as an important addition to the international North-South Transport Corridor. According to him, the corridor would serve a dual purpose—linking East to West while also providing an alternative route between North and South.

Aliyev noted that, alongside the existing route from Russia to Iran through Azerbaijan, a new one could emerge—passing through Armenia, Nakhichevan, and onward to Iran. He emphasized that Azerbaijan has already completed the necessary transport infrastructure on its territory. The main missing segment of the North-South route lies in Iran, where approximately 150 kilometers of railway still need to be constructed—a process that could take several years.

He also highlighted that the “Zangezur corridor” could play a pivotal role in linking Northern Europe with the Persian Gulf. The new route could run through Russia, Azerbaijan, Zangezur, Nakhichevan, and then continue along Iran’s existing railway network.
