Zangezur corridor is surrender of Armenian sovereignty, says Russian MP
Vitaly Milonov, Member of the Russian State Duma, commented to Alpha News on the statement of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev about the so-called “Zangezur corridor”.
“The alliance with NATO in the form of Turkiye is what allows Aliyev to make such statements, because it is clear that this is coordinated with his partners. If we are talking about some kind of normalization between Yerevan and Baku, then I cannot imagine what kind of normalization there could be after everything that happened. But I’m speaking now as an ordinary person, not as a member of the ruling party of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who apparently has other inclinations and strategic goals,” Milonov said.
According to the Russian MP, agreements around the so-called “Zangezur corridor” will lead to the end of Armenia’s centuries-old existence.
“The Zangezur corridor is the surrender of Armenian sovereignty,” the Russian MP emphasized.
According to Milonov, a peace treaty is a certain condition that has now been voiced in Brussels and Washington to then envelop Armenia in a number of international obligations.
“These international obligations will completely deprive Armenia of its sovereignty. That is, Brussels will be the so-called author of this peace treaty, and any movement of Armenia that does not satisfy Brussels will mean the risk of breaking the peace treaty and military actions against Armenia. Thus, Brussels will be able to dictate its terms in all directions. Let’s not forget that Azerbaijan not only buys its weapons but also receives them from NATO countries. We understand perfectly well that if there had been the political will of Brussels or Washington, the nature of Azerbaijan’s behavior in Nagorno-Karabakh would have been completely different.
This means that Azerbaijan received carte blanche for its operation in Karabakh; that’s why no one seriously intervened. Look at the level of unprecedented pressure on Russia during the special operation in eastern Ukraine and the level of pressure on Azerbaijan during their operation in Karabakh. This suggests that the ethnic cleansing of the Armenians of Artsakh was an operation that received behind-the-scenes approval in Western countries,” Milonov concluded.
