Zurabishvili shows she is fighting but does not take risky steps – Andranik Hovhannisyan
Georgian president Salome Zurabishvili, whose term in office expires in 4 days, has said she remains president and commander-in-chief of Georgia. Will Zurabishvili go further, or is this just a political statement? Alpha News spoke with international affairs expert Andranik Hovhannisyan about this topic.
“This looks like a statement by a president who is going to leave office with honor. This means fighting, in fact Zurabishvili has a chance to fight differently, but she does not do it. She does not take risky steps, apparently considering their consequences. Some experts believe that Zurabishvili has the opportunity not only to verbally not recognize the election results and say that the parliament is illegitimate but also to gather around herself people who have recently left some state agencies and announce the creation of an alternative parliament. Zurabishvili has such an opportunity, but she does not do it,” Hovhannisyan said.
According to the expert, if Salome Zurabishvili takes such steps, it will mean that she is violating the Constitution.
“The opposition says that Zurabishvili should use this opportunity while she is legitimate and in office. If she takes this step, two poles will emerge, both of which can be considered legitimate, since on the one hand there is the parliament, and on the other hand there is the president, who is still considered legitimate and can take such steps. If Salome Zurabishvili takes such steps, it will mean that she is violating the Constitution and trying to seize power. There are already states in the European Union that have recognized the legitimacy and results of the recent elections. In other words, the EU is not uniform in its assessments. Therefore, the question arises: Does the European Union or only some states fully support Salome Zurabishvili?” Andranik Hovhannisyan concluded.
