Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev commented on the news that Azerbaijani NGOs have sent an open letter to the heads of institutions of the United States and the EU that monitor sanctions against Russia.

“This is an attempt to impose sanctions against Armenia. This statement basically means that, look, Armenia is helping Russians evade sanctions, which means secondary sanctions should be introduced against it. If it works, this is already a lot, because it is the attack on the use of secondary sanctions that is the West’s main way to fight Russia. But Armenia has never been the subject of secondary sanctions. This statement by Azerbaijani NGOs is an invitation that look, you are missing, the Armenians are helping Russians; sanctions should be imposed against them,” Zhuravlev said.

According to the expert, the United States has other concerns now.

“America has enough concerns of its own right now, America has elections right around the corner. But Turkey, I think, will begin to raise this issue in NATO. It is a member of the organization. So it has some opportunity for PR activities. But America itself is definitely not up to it. In addition, Americans have a very positive attitude towards Pashinyan. If they impose sanctions against Pashinyan, it will mean that those who led Armenia before will return to power, and Americans do not need it,” Zhuravlev concluded.
