Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist and expert on the South Caucasus Konstantin Tasits commented on the situation in Georgia.

“We see that despite the convincing victory of the Georgian Dream Party in the elections, the opposition has not accepted it and is trying to somehow put pressure on the government through civil disobedience and achieve re-election or simply to remove the government. To do this, they are pitching tents, trying to organize some street protests, rallies, and the like. However, we see that so far, the opposition does not have a significant mass of the population on its side. The average number of demonstrators is not growing; it is at a fairly average level. And essentially, a minimal number of participants are involved in illegal actions. The security forces are still in control of the situation,” Tasits said.

According to the expert, the authorities retain control over the domestic political situation.

“The further prospects of the situation depend to a large extent on the West’s reaction—whether it will exert some increased pressure on the Georgian Dream—since the opposition forces are not enough. This also depends on the final assessments that the OSCE international observation mission, which was at these elections, will give. If this report is generally favorable to the Georgian Dream, there will be no more doubts that the elections were held fairly and honestly. In general, the positions of the authorities look more favored so far; they retain control over the domestic political situation. The positions of the authorities are stronger than the capabilities of the opposition; the authorities generally control the situation in the republic,” Tasits concluded.
