Ashot Madoyan, the administrative head of Verin Shorzha village in the Vardenis community of Gegharkunik Province, spoke to Marz News about the challenges facing the village.

“There are hardly any residents left—only about 110 people remain, mostly elderly. We have no school, no transportation. The roads were in terrible condition, but recently, there have been positive changes, and now they are much better,” the village official said.

According to him, the village is completely surrounded by Azerbaijani troops.

“Even someone standing in the village can be shot at. Our community’s lands, residential areas, pastures, and drinking water sources are under Azerbaijani control. They’ve already taken about 2,000 hectares of our territory. Our main issue is security—the village is not safe. That’s why 90% of the population avoids going up to the mountains; they’re afraid the tractor drivers might be shot. The government must take action to define the borders and ensure people feel safe,” Madoyan concluded.
