Overchuk’s visit to Yerevan is cautious attempt to clarify relations – Bogdan Bezpalko
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political analyst Bogdan Bezpalko commented on the meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk in Yerevan.
“Russia, represented by Overchuk, wants to clarify what exactly Armenia will do in the near future—specifically, its plans regarding membership in the CSTO and the EAEU, as well as how it intends to build its relationship with Russia in terms of military base deployments. All these issues are interconnected. Naturally, the movement towards Azerbaijan and the United States within the framework of concluding an agreement on the ‘Zangezur corridor’ is of interest to Russia and, to some extent, causes concern,” the analyst said.
According to the expert, it can be assumed that a certain reconciliation of positions is underway between Russia and Armenia.
“Now, as I believe, this official visit is precisely an attempt to understand what, in fact, the Armenian side will undertake next—what it might demand, such as economic incentives, benefits, or preferences, and conversely, what Russia might threaten if Armenia takes sharp anti-Russian actions. I think that this conversation is a cautious attempt to clarify relations, which began with Overchuk’s visit to Armenia,” Bezpalko said.
