In an interview with Radio Liberty, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte commented on the situation in Georgia, the European Union’s decision to reconsider relations with Tbilisi, and answered the question of whether Georgia remains a country aspiring to membership in the Alliance.
According to Rutte, any Euro-Atlantic country wishing to become a NATO member can officially declare its intention, after which the corresponding procedure will begin. However, the Secretary General noted that he is “not naïve” about what is happening in Georgia.
He added that the situation around Georgia should be considered in a broader context, within the framework of events taking place in the South Caucasus.
Rutte highlighted positive changes in relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing that this became possible “partly thanks to the actions of President Trump.”
