Miriam Lexmann, a Member of the European Parliament from Slovakia and rapporteur on Armenia, commented to Alpha News on the question of the right of return for Armenians from Artsakh.

According to the MEP, it is necessary to initiate discussions on the right of Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh to return to their places of origin. “This issue will be discussed. However, it cannot be resolved unilaterally. Azerbaijan must also be involved in these discussions. And before any decisions are made, the security of refugees must be guaranteed.

I am aware of the position of the Armenian government on this matter. At the same time, I believe this issue should be discussed with the authorities, because the European Union has always supported the right of people to return to their places of origin. For this reason, I fully intend to initiate these discussions. This is a very important topic.

As I have already said, all security guarantees must be ensured in advance. At the same time, the broader geopolitical context, existing conflicts, and related circumstances must be taken into account,” the MEP said, adding that the right of people to return must be protected and remain a long-term goal.
