The Russian factor continues to play a key role in Armenia’s energy system and cannot currently be bypassed due to existing infrastructure dependency. That is what Vahe Davtyan, an energy security expert, told Alpha News.

According to him, as long as Yerevan’s official authorities do not raise the question of changing ownership of the gas transmission system, there is virtually no scope within the new energy policy to bypass the Russian factor.

“Given the current ownership of the infrastructure, the Russian factor will continue to occupy a central place in Armenia’s energy system,” the expert noted.

Vahe Davtyan stressed that the policy being pursued by Yerevan looks strange and resembles more of an adventure, as new initiatives are being launched in the absence of any real alternative infrastructure.
