Maria Zakharova, official spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ironically compared the Armenian authorities, who seek to join the European Union while remaining a member of the EAEU, to a passenger who wants to get from point “A” to point “D.”

“Imagine an airport, a waiting lounge, a layover, a connecting flight. Several passengers who have gone through all kinds of security checks, border control, and so on. Each and every one of them is law-abiding, has specific goals and objectives. And then, when boarding is announced, suddenly one of the passengers, who was seemingly booked on this flight, says: ‘You know, I’m not going to point B, I’m going to point… well, probably closer to point D,'” Zakharova said on air on Sputnik radio.

Speaking about Armenia’s aspiration to join the EU while remaining in the EAEU, Zakharova noted that “this is no longer even an attempt to sit on two chairs at once.”

“It is not normal when there is manipulation. When good intentions and the rule of law, which ensure the normal functioning of a given sphere, are used for dishonest purposes, that is not normal. If you want to reach point D via point B, that is also possible. It’s called transit. But that has its own logistics. When you check in for point B, you fly there, get off, say your goodbyes, and go where you need to go. That was an open choice. And it was made. You want to change your choice? Go ahead. There is a civilized way to do that,” she explained.
