Three stone fragments of historical value, linked to an 18th-century Armenian church, were found during ongoing road construction work on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi, Artur Mirzoyan, founder of Vescot News, said on social media, sharing photos of the artifacts.
“One of the stones bears a bas-relief of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus. The fragments found also have Armenian inscriptions. The connection of the finds to the Kamoyants Surb Gevorg Church is almost beyond doubt. The inscription on one of the stones reads ‘Kamoyants’ and also gives the year 1788,” he said.
Surb Gevorg Church stood opposite the present-day Freedom Square metro station. It was destroyed in 1937–1938.
