Danila Gureev, political scientist, commented to Alpha News on a possible meeting of the leaders of the US, Russia and China at the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries.

“The upcoming meeting of the three leaders may well become historic. Why? Because if we look now at the world order that exists in the real world, until recently we lived in a unipolar model in which the United States was dominant in the world. Today this system has changed sharply, and China and the Russian Federation have not simply jumped in but have become fairly serious players in world politics. And in this meeting, Donald Trump, as someone who is already somewhat on his way out in terms of US global dominance, is not exactly ‘handing over the keys’ but trying to build a system in which all three countries stand to gain the most. So when we consider this kind of meeting, there is indeed a lot to expect from it, and it may well go down in history, in Russian history textbooks,” the political scientist believes.

In Gureev’s opinion, the meeting of the three leaders is very promising in terms of resolving a host of issues that have accumulated for each of the countries.

“If we come down from the heavens a little and talk about practice, what does Donald Trump want first of all in the long term today? Donald Trump wants effective oil prices. Donald Trump wants effective diesel prices. Donald Trump wants to reach a deal. What does Russia want? The Russian Federation wants an end to the conflict, an end achieved through a complete halt, or rather, through full and unconditional support for Ukraine. What does China want? Well, China wants quite a lot: China wants both economic and political dividends. So it is possible to help Donald Trump with some of his projects, and it is also possible to help Vladimir Putin with the same issues of peace settlement. There are indeed considerable prospects for the meeting, there is something to talk about and discuss, and in such a trilateral format at that. But we need to see in practice what exactly will be discussed by the leaders and how, in a face-to-face format,” the expert concluded.
