Hakob Badalyan: Calling on Armenia to join NATO is the statement detached from reality

Political commentator Hakob Badalyan considers irresponsible the statement of the chair of European Committee for NATO Enlargement Gunther Fehlinger to the Prime Minister of Armenia, in which he called for joining NATO.

“Just as in Armenia, irresponsible and disrespectful statements are made by various figures based on different considerations, so in Europe there are such figures who can make such irresponsible statements for a number of reasons. I believe that every statement detached from reality is irresponsible, especially if the nuances that exist in today’s international conditions are not taken into account,” Hakob Badalyan told Alpha News.

Gunther Fehlinger’s appeal to the Prime Minister of Armenia received a wide response in the media yesterday. It should be emphasized that the European Committee for NATO Enlargement has nothing to do with the North Atlantic Alliance, that is, Gunther Fehlinger did not express an official position.

Nevertheless, the political commentator attaches great importance to cooperation with NATO and emphasizes that Armenia should develop relations with other countries and structures, in addition to Russia. NATO, according to him, is an important structure.

“Armenia should continue to cooperate with NATO as it has always done. Naturally, this should be done on the principle of complementarity, not by opposing NATO to Russia, or vice versa. Moreover, during the Russian-Ukrainian war, Armenia strives not to end up in any trench, which is very important,” Hakob Badalyan noted.
