September 17 is the International Day of Awareness of the Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), also known as Periodic Disease or “Armenian Disease” (in Armenia they call it “Yerevani” disease). On September 16, 2023, an international conference on Periodic Disease was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, with experts from Armenia and Russia participating.

The conference was attended by members of the Nashe Delo Foundation – Chair of the Board of Trustees Aram Danielyan and Chair of the Armenian Medical Association of St. Petersburg Artur Apresyan. Periodic disease is a genetic disorder that mainly affects representatives of ancient nations whose ancestors lived in the Mediterranean region – Armenians, Jews and Arabs. Therefore, it is sometimes called the disease of “ancient nations”.

The main symptoms of the disease are recurrent fevers, which can be accompanied by painful inflammation of the abdomen, chest and joints. The earlier the periodic disease is diagnosed, the more chances there are to avoid complications and ensure a normal quality of life. With timely diagnosis and proper treatment under medical supervision, complications of the disease can be avoided.
