EXCLUSIVE | Luis Moreno Ocampo: Armenians of Artsakh are victims of the 2023 genocide and this cannot be ignored
It is unbelievable, but after 1915, today we are witnessing a new genocide against the Armenians, the former Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno Ocampo, told Alpha News.
“I have prepared a new report on the events in Artsakh for the University of São Paulo, and it actually complements the report that I prepared in August last year. This was done at the request of the President of Artsakh, who today is in prison in Baku, like other Artsakh leaders, and this causes serious concern. In October, I joined the largest university in South America, the University of São Paulo, and we are trying to discuss rights and law.
It is unbelievable, but after 1915, today we are witnessing a new genocide against the Armenians. The Armenians of Artsakh are victims of the 2023 genocide and this cannot be ignored. Until now, states that previously denied the Armenian Genocide, today, even the United States, have started doing research in this direction,” said Luis Moreno Ocampo.
According to him, the only way to protect the people of Nagorno-Karabakh is to prove that they are victims of genocide.
“It is very important to talk about the genocide because, firstly, the only way to protect the people of Nagorno-Karabakh is to prove that they were victims of the genocide. They have the right to return to their homes, they have the right to compensation, and most importantly, the leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh, who are in prison, held captive in Baku, must be released. They actually became hostages. Why are they hostages? Because in this way Azerbaijan is trying to send a signal to the Armenians: Look at Nagorno-Karabakh, if you return, we will humiliate you, imprison or destroy you. So, they keep these people in prison as evidence.
Therefore, they must be released as quickly as possible. All this is genocide, and this new report actually complements what I described back in August,” said Luis Moreno Ocampo.
