‘This is a very positive decision’: expert on Iran’s interest in gaining EAEU observer status
Speaking with Alpha News, Senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Irina Fedorova commented on Iran’s interest in obtaining EAEU observer status.
According to the expert, this is an alternative for Iran to develop foreign economic relations under the sanctions regime with Western countries.
“I believe this is a very positive decision on the part of the Iranian leadership because, under the sanctions regime against Iran and Russia, ties in the EAEU are very important. This will help ease the pressure of sanctions on Iran and give it greater opportunities to conduct foreign economic policy.
In addition, this will provide more opportunities to create and work on the North-South Corridor, which, as one of the options, should pass through the territory of Iran. So, of course, for Iran, this is an alternative way to develop foreign economic relations under the sanctions regime with Western countries. This is also very important for the EAEU because Iran is located on the shores of the Persian Gulf, and its ports are very important logistics points for routes from the countries of Euro-Asian economic cooperation to other countries of the East,” Fedorova said.
