Alexander Tsinker: Nothing heroic about Armenia’s accession to the Rome Statute, as they believe in Europe
Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Alexander Tsinker commented on the French President’s statement about Armenia’s courage to join the Rome Statute, the visit of the Armenian Foreign Minister to Brussels, and the release of Armenian prisoners of war.
“There is nothing heroic about the fact that a country joins the Rome Statute. I believe that the statement by French President Emmanuel Macron was connected precisely with the fact that after this, the Russian leader will not be able to come to Armenia since, by the decision of the International Criminal Court, he may be subject to arrest. Russia considered this step unfriendly, although, according to the Armenian authorities, the ratification of the Rome Statute was necessary to be able to appeal to the International Criminal Court in case of any encroachments on the territory of Armenia on the part of Azerbaijan and Turkiye,” Tsinker said.
“Russia’s reaction to such a step by Armenia was negative, so Macron called it courage, regardless of the opinion of the neighbors,” the political scientist concluded.
Alpha News also discussed with the expert Ankara’s statement on a peace treaty between Yerevan and Baku, the snap presidential election in Azerbaijan, as well as the seizure by Israeli border guards of Azerbaijani weapons for Hamas.
