Russian military expert Alexey Leonkov commented to Alpha News on the possible consequences of signing a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“The upcoming signing of a peace treaty under US protectorate is nothing more than a false bottom suitcase. Because everything that is signed under the auspices of the United States, that is, under its supervision and so on, very often results in losses for those who signed this agreement.

I think that the main loser in this agreement will be Armenia. Because, despite the fact that a certain end will be put to the conflict, this does not mean that this conflict will not flare up again. Because by making concessions, Armenia will be forced to make them again. At the same time, the Americans will promise Armenia all possible support and protection of democracy; that is, we can actually say that Armenia will begin to lose sovereignty. Azerbaijan is already calling the territory of Armenia ‘Western Azerbaijan.’ This is a bad tendency that may result in problems for Armenia in the future. What Americans call the defense of democracy and the recognition of sovereignty is only valid on paper. In reality, everything is happening in a way that benefits the United States and all those who ordered this conflict; they will receive their dividends. Armenia will most likely lose its statehood,” Leonkov said.

According to Leonkov, the signing of a peace treaty is not a panacea for Armenia, and may be a step toward new challenges for the Armenian people.

“There is some kind of political bargaining here on the part of the Armenian authorities, because they understand that their mission, which they completed, may actually end, and the question is what the future will be. That is, it is the uncertainty of the future that allows them to delay this process in order to bargain for more convenient positions for themselves.

The only victims of this will be the Armenian people, whose interests are expressed by those who absolutely do not need Armenia. They connect their future with abroad. Therefore, there is such a ‘trade’ going on in which they concede in some ways and do not concede in others. This is a game for the public, although everyone understands that the agreement will be concluded on conditions unfavorable for Armenia, and there is no guarantee that this agreement will lead to peaceful existence with Azerbaijan,” Leonkov said.
