Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko commented on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statement that the Armenian authorities want to create a situation in which war will become impossible.

According to the expert, Armenia is simply not capable of creating such a situation.

“In my opinion, Pashnyan’s statement is not true. Neither the Armenian government nor Armenia in general is now capable of creating a situation in which war will definitely become impossible. To do this, the country must have tremendous power and capacity. Armenia does not have this. All this can be provided by some kind of powerful international support, which Armenia also does not have. France’s statement is just words. As for Russia, Pashinyan is seriously spoiling relations with it. In addition, Russia is not at all inclined now to enter into any major military conflicts in the Caucasus. Considering that neither Turkey nor Azerbaijan are abandoning their intention to punch a corridor, Pashinyan’s statements are likely to be just empty talk,” Bezpalko said.

According to the political scientist, a major military conflict can be avoided if Armenia relies on Russia.

“In general, a major military conflict can still be avoided. For this, Armenia and Pashinyan need to rely on the Russian leadership and the Russian military presence. Armenia is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). If Azerbaijan and Turkey try to attack Armenia, then under the union treaty, Russia will be obliged to defend Armenia. If Armenia quits the CSTO and concludes an agreement with France or with anyone else, Russia will be released from these obligations. Especially if the Russian military, under Pashinyan’s pressure, leaves the territory of Armenia,” Bezpalko concluded.
