Armenia needs to hold a nationwide referendum on joining the European Union or retaining membership in the Eurasian Economic Union before December 2026, when the issue will be discussed at a meeting of EAEU leaders. This was stated by Mikhail Galuzin, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, in an interview with TASS.

“It is obvious that if the call for a referendum goes unheeded by that time, the leaders will take this fact into account when determining the corresponding further joint steps,” the diplomat noted.

He recalled that “the joint statement issued by the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on May 29 regarding Armenia’s European aspirations speaks of the need to hold a nationwide referendum in that country on joining the EU or remaining within the EAEU as soon as possible, though without specifying a particular date.”

“At the same time, it has already been indicated that this issue will once again be discussed at the December session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, when the heads of state are to be presented with a report on the possible consequences of suspending the application of the EAEU Treaty of May 29, 2014 toward Armenia,” Galuzin added.
