Alpha News commentator and journalist Arthur Sahakyan remarked that the Armenian Diaspora is not a factor in US policy.
“The US recognized the Armenian Genocide back in 1973. After that, both houses of Congress passed resolutions, and in 2019, both houses unanimously, including the Senate, recognized the Genocide and passed a resolution. If Donald Trump did not use the term ‘Armenian Genocide’ in his address this year, it does not mean that the US does not recognize it. No, the US recognized it much earlier. As a US citizen and an Armenian, I find it unfortunate and disappointing that Trump did not use the term ‘genocide.’
However, we cannot claim that Trump is yielding to Turkey’s threats or fears Erdogan. In fact, in my opinion, the US President made a political gesture towards Turkey today. Today, Trump’s priority is addressing global problems. Turkey is of great importance in all these global problems. Considering that Trump has good relations with Erdogan, he simply made a political deal. I am sure that the topic of the Armenian Genocide was discussed during the conversation between Trump and Erdogan. We see how sensitive it is for Turkey and its president. The Armenian Diaspora, unfortunately, is not a factor in US policy,” Arthur Sahakyan said.
