Asmik Grigorian shines on stage of Hamburg State Opera

The premiere of Richard Strauss’ opera ‘Salome’ directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov took place on October 29 at the Hamburg State Opera.

Over the course of the week, the production received numerous positive reviews, with special attention paid to Lithuanian-Armenian soprano Asmik Grigorian and her brilliant performance as Salome.

“Ever since her explosive debut in the role five years ago in Salzburg, Asmik Grigorian has claimed her place as her own. Though Grigorian eclipses everyone onstage, the cast is uniformly strong,” FT reports.

‘Salome’ is one of Strauss’ first and most famous operas. It is based on Oscar Wilde’s one-act play of the same name. ‘Salome’, Strauss’s expressionist work, debuted in December 1905 in Dresden, Germany.
