Book “Concentration Camps of the Armenian Genocide Era” published

A new book, “Concentration Camps of the Armenian Genocide Era” (500 pages), has been published, prepared by Bedross Der Matossian, American historian and specialist in modern Middle Eastern history and the history of the Armenian Genocide, together with Edita Gzoyan, for the series “Armenians in the Modern and Early Modern World.”

The project began in 2023, based on materials from a conference organized by Mihran Minasyan and Harutyun Marutyan. Its goal is to publish research annually on this understudied topic.

The book includes work by historians from various countries, survivor testimonies, and analysis of the camp system, living conditions, and humanitarian aid.

Separate chapters are devoted to children’s experiences, local relations, and Ottoman laws. The genocide is examined within the context of comparative concentration camp history.

The project is supported by the Freedman Foundation and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Der Matossian and Gzoyan note the complexity of working on the volume, which brings together the work of both established and emerging scholars.
