Canadians voted for Liberals as an anti-Trump force – Shahen Mirakian
The snap parliamentary elections in Canada have concluded, with the Liberals securing victory. Alpha News discussed this topic with Shahen Mirakian, the chair of the Armenian National Committee of Canada.
“Thinking about how these elections would go and what to expect from them in January, we would have predicted that the Liberals wouldn’t make it into parliament at all—let alone as a minority. The Conservatives were expected to win by a landslide. But when US President Trump began making statements against Canada, saying that it should not be a country, Canadians were outraged. As if Trump decides which country should exist and which should not. Such statements angered Canadians, and they decided to choose a prime minister who would be able to find common ground with Trump. This is what changed the course of the elections,” Mirakian noted.
According to him, Canadians elected Mark Carney as prime minister to find a way to get along with Trump.
“Trump congratulated Carney on his election, and they both expressed a desire to meet in person and discuss a range of issues related to both the security system and the economy and trade. However, one day Trump says one thing, and the next, he says something entirely different. And we don’t know when he will want Canada to cease to be a country again,” Mirakian emphasized.
