Citizen tortured at Yerevan police station to extract confession

In Yerevan on September 6, around 1: 30 p.m., patrol service officers stopped a citizen on the street and, using force against him, took him to the Shengavit police station, where, after finding nothing during a personal search, they subjected him to torture in an attempt to force him to confess to possessing a certain amount of drugs, approximately 0.5 grams of marijuana. This was reported by Ashot Simonyan, a lawyer.

“After an unlawful detention and roughly six hours of torture at the police station, the citizen was taken to the Investigative Department of Shengavit of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia, where, deprived of any legal assistance or support, he was forced to ‘confess’ that the drugs brought by the police officers allegedly belonged to him and were intended for personal use.

Today, the citizen has already contacted me to represent his interests. All injuries will be documented through a medical examination at a private center and submitted to the investigating body and the prosecutor’s office.

A criminal complaint has been filed,” the lawyer noted.
