Crisis at the Meymandar market: Strong Armenia members learn about villagers’ problems

Tigran Abramyan and Harutyun Mnatsakanyan, representatives of the Strong Armenia party, visited the market in the village of Ovtashat (the “Meymandar market”) to see firsthand the difficult situation that has developed in the domestic agricultural market.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the problems and challenges faced by Armenian farmers following Russia’s introduction of restrictions on imports of a number of goods from the country.

Tomatoes are selling for 90-130 drams per kilogram, which doesn’t even cover the costs of harvesting and transportation. The price of potatoes has fallen from 150 to 80 drams per kg compared to last year.

Harutyun Mnatsakanyan called the government’s statements about entering European markets “superficial and primitive manipulation.” “The authorities should have thought about diversifying export markets several years ago, not now, when the situation has become hopeless,” he said.
