Political analyst Vladimir Kireev commented to Alpha News on the visit of Steve Witkoff, special envoy of the US president, and possible agreements between Moscow and Washington.

According to the expert, significant progress emerged in the interaction between the two countries in late summer 2026 on a wide range of issues, including trade and economic, political and technological cooperation. At the same time, public visits and meetings are only the visible part of a much larger communication process, a significant portion of which takes place in a closed format.

“It is clear that we do not see most of this communication. Such public visits are only the outcome, a way to confirm something in person. This concerns interaction on a wide range of issues: trade and economic, political and technological cooperation. And only one of these issues, an important one, certainly important, a priority, but not the only one between the US and Russia, is the conflict in Ukraine. A dialogue has begun about the need to build this world order on new foundations. Whether they will be fair or unfair is hard to say. And therefore, the US needs to remove this conflict, which prevents it from interacting normally with Russia and which was generated by previous administrations. That is why there is large-scale pressure on Zelensky to sign peace agreements,” Kireev said.

In the expert’s view, the specific terms of possible agreements remain an open question.

“The question is, of course, open, and it is unclear what will be agreed. Moreover, the main obstacle, of course, is that elections to both chambers of Congress will soon be held in the US, and the balance of power inside the United States may shift in favor of globalists and supporters of war with Russia. But at the moment the conversation is going very positively, and there is hope that, even if it is not possible to fully end this history of the conflict in Ukraine (of course, it is unlikely to be ended so easily), it will be possible to halt the slide toward a major war between the EU countries and the NATO bloc and, in the longer term, Russia. This is a task of top priority, because it could affect the entire planet, all of humanity. And this scenario of a major war is not needed, so the dialogue is productive, and if it continues, it promises mutually beneficial cooperation for both sides, Russian and American. So we expect some new productive agreements, which are only a facade for a much deeper and more substantive part that is taking place in a non-public format,” Kireev concluded.
