Kristina Yermak, an international affairs expert, spoke to Alpha News about the EAEU report on the consequences of Armenia’s possible rapprochement with the European Union. According to her, the very fact that the document was published shows that the discussion has moved into the practical sphere. The EAEU countries have carried out a comprehensive assessment of the risks and consequences of Armenia’s European course, not only for Yerevan but for all the Eurasian capitals.

“The very fact that the report was published signals that, for the EAEU, discussions have turned into practical action. It is a preventive step, but it builds on the warnings the member states have addressed to the Armenian side. If we look at the content and structure of the report, we will see that the countries have carried out the most comprehensive possible preliminary assessment of the measures Armenia has already taken on its path to joining the European Union, as well as an analysis of the risks and consequences not only for Yerevan but for each of the Eurasian capitals. So this document should not be underestimated, as the countries will be guided by it when planning their future steps,” Yermak said.

According to the expert, the emotional reaction of Pashinyan, Armenia’s Prime Minister, is an attempt to maintain a course that allows the country to stay on two tracks at once without facing serious consequences.

“At the same time, the Armenian side’s reaction and its emotional context are nothing surprising or new either. When discussions and their consequences take on new forms and become instrumentalized, they begin to be perceived completely differently. So the excessive emotionality is an attempt to maintain a course that allows the country to stay on two tracks at once without facing serious consequences,” Yermak concluded.
