Further escalation around Ukraine could lead to large-scale confrontation: Bogdan Bezpalko
Political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko commented to Alpha News on statements about the possible use of nuclear weapons, as well as the prospects for the further development of relations between Russia and Western countries against the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine.
“The West now faces two directions in which it can move. The first is to reconcile with Russia, lift the sanctions at least partially and begin to normalize relations. The second is to increase escalation and enter into direct conflict with Russia in one form or another,” Bezpalko said.
According to the political scientist, various options for supporting Ukraine are being discussed among the possible steps to increase involvement in the conflict. In his words, further escalation could lead to a direct clash between Russia and the West.
“This could be an attempt to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine, the provision of additional opportunities to strike Russian territory, the deployment of limited military contingents or other forms of participation. I believe the Russian president is speaking about this because many in the West do not believe Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons, or think it will not dare to take such a step. At the same time, global nuclear escalation would mean extremely grave consequences for all sides,” Bezpalko concluded.
