At least 1,000 civilians were killed in a four-day massacre in the Syrian provinces of Latakia and Tartus. The clashes erupted between representatives of Syria’s new government and supporters of former president Bashar al-Assad. Media reports said al-Sharaa army soldiers shot people in the streets, forcing them to first crawl on all fours through the ruins. Two Armenians, father and son Antoine and Fati Putros, were also shot in Latakia on Saturday.

Alpha News spoke with political scientist Robert Margaryan on the subject.

“Everyone had high hopes for Donald Trump’s policy to establish peace in various regions of the world. But he started with Ukraine. In the case of Syria, we saw the escalation of the situation. I had thought the situation in Syria had already stabilized, with power established and the danger seemingly passed. They used armed groups there to perpetrate ethnic cleansing. The horrifying footage shows genocide, ethnic cleansing in the 21st century, which is really inexcusable. The silence of the international community is baffling. We should not expect much from Trump. He has not come to save the whole world,” the political scientist emphasized.

According to him, it is unfortunate that the international community limited itself solely to statements of concern and did not take any other steps.

“For me, the international community’s indifference to the ethnic cleansing in Syria is strange. These scenes have been extremely horrifying. We have witnessed the atrocities taking place in Syria, yet the international community remains content with just expressing pain and concern,” Margaryan added.
