No breakthrough decisions should be expected from Putin-Pashinyan talks: Vladimir Shapovalov

Vladimir Shapovalov, political scientist, commented to Alpha News on the prospects for dialogue between Moscow and Yerevan.

According to the expert, no breakthrough decisions should be expected from the talks between Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia, since the current course of the Armenian authorities is complicating the development of Russian-Armenian relations.

“No breakthrough decisions should be expected from the talks between Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia. The reason for this is the destructive and unconstructive position of Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia, since the course of the current Armenian government is aimed at the degradation of Russian-Armenian relations. At the same time, this course does not correspond to the interests of the Armenian people,” Shapovalov said.

According to the expert, Russia maintains a friendly attitude toward the Armenian people, but the further development of bilateral relations depends on Yerevan’s foreign policy choice.

“As for Russia, Russia has been, is, and will remain a friend of the Armenian people. This friendship is many hundreds of years old. But in the current situation, Armenia needs to choose: either to be with Russia and the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, or to hold a course toward the European Union. This choice rests entirely on the conscience of the current Armenian authorities. Trying to sit on two chairs won’t work,” Vladimir Shapovalov concluded.
