Speaking with Alpha News, German political scientist Alexander Rahr commented on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s visit to Estonia.

“We can say that the Armenian Prime Minister wants to have it both ways. He has chosen this path and wants to conduct a peculiar diplomacy—not fully quarrelling with Russia, not being a direct ally of Russia on certain issues, and attempting to align with the West. However, I believe he understands that Armenia will not be able and will never be a member of the European Union and NATO, but he certainly hopes to try to get some support from the EU, especially against Turkey and Azerbaijan,” Rahr said.

According to him, Pashinyan seeks to lean West.

“Regarding visits to memorials, I believe Pashinyan has adopted a position that exists in the West. On one hand, it is necessary to praise and thank Russia and the peoples of the Soviet Union for liberating Germany from fascism, which is why Pashinyan is going to Moscow to celebrate May 9. At the same time, he adheres to a point of view that, of course, does not exist in Russia but actually exists in the West—that there was another totalitarian system, namely communism, which also brought immense suffering and grief to the peoples of Europe and that those who fought against this system or who were tormented by the communist system also need to have monuments erected in their honor. I believe he has simply adopted this position. It is not Armenian, it simply exists in many ways in the West, and in this regard, he has aligned himself with the Western world,” Rahr concluded.
