Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist Alexander Asafov commented on the news that the Armenian parliament adopted in the first reading a bill launching the EU accession process.

According to the expert, Armenia can choose any direction it wants, but it is unlikely that this prospect will be formalized in the near future.

“The prospects for European integration of any country are now very doubtful, since there are a lot of difficulties in the current political situation. I do not want to recall Turkey’s application to join the European Union, it would not be very appropriate to recall that Ukraine’s constitutional entry into the European Union has already been actually rejected. In addition, there are a lot of other areas that are not exactly stuck, it’s just that decisions on them do not seem to be super-urgent right now.

A lot depends on the position of the Americans as well. Therefore, Armenia can choose any direction it wants at the national level, but I do not think that this prospect will be formalized in any way soon. Armenia demonstrates to itself and to everyone around it that it has a certain desire, a certain direction of movement, and it is ready to follow this,” Asafov said.

According to the political scientist, all this leads to a cooling of relations between Moscow and Yerevan.

“I think that the decision on the European integration of a country is made by all members of the European Union, and not at all unilaterally. Armenia wants to discuss this topic amid obvious political and military problems to at least tell their own people that they are moving in this direction. Russia will leave Armenia the sovereign right to adopt any bills. But in general, I believe that we are talking, at least, about a cooling of relations and a decrease in cooperation,” Asafov concluded.
